Abstract

CH3 CHI[Dl The independence of the two benzenoid nuclei in 2, 2'-dirnethoxybiphenyl is strikingly illustrated by the ease with which this compound undergoes dimetalation with n- butyllithium. Dibenzofuran, which contains a single ether linkage, cannot be dimetalated by n-butyllithium under customary conditions. An interesting case of dimetalation of thiophthen by ethylmagnesium bromide under drastic conditions has just been reported.
