Abstract Methionine synthase catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from 5- methyltetrahydrofolate to homocysteine, producing methionine and tetrahydrofolate. Benzimidazole and deazatetrahydrofolates derivatives have been shown to inhibit methionine synthase by competing with the substrate 5-methyltetrahydrofolate.
