Abstract
Reductive cleavages using sodium in liquid ammonia have been reported for both ethers and sulfides. Diaryl ethers are reported to give the corresponding phenol and aromatic hydrocarbon with the unsymmetrical diaryl ethers cleaving in the direction which gives the weakest a~ id.~.~ Alkyl aryl ethers are cleaved in poor yields to the phenol and alkane,? while dialkyl ethers are unaffected.
