Abstract
Anisaldehyde, I, was condensed with ethyl acetate under the influence of sodium to give p- methoxycinnamic ester, I1; the latter was hydrogenated over Raney nickel to p- (pmethoxyphenyl)-propionic ester, I11; the latter was hydrolyzed to P-(p-hydroxyphenyl)- propionic acid, IV, under the influence of hydroiodic acid.
