Abstract

A new synthetic method has been developed to synthesize commercially important porphyrins. Pyrrole and aldehyde are heated in a solvent-free reaction in a closed vial in air. The method tolerates a variety of functional groups, but the specific reaction conditions vary depending on the nature of the aldehyde. This is a greener synthesis for many porphyrins compared to most other synthetic strategies.
