Abstract

A previously unrecognized side reaction in the Reformatsky reaction has been identified in the reaction of heptanal with ethyl bromoacetate. The products are derived from the two isomeric heptanoates of the glycol 2-pentyl-3-hydroxynonano1, formed from 3 mol of heptanal under the presumed catalysis of the bromo zinc enolate.
