Abstract
The synthesis of thiazole2 and pyrimidine3 analogs of pyridoxine (I) was undertaken originally to make the compounds available for antimalarial tests4 The present paper reports the preparation of 2-methyl-4, 5-bis-(hydroxymethyl)-thiazole (11), and describes numerous experiments designed to lead to the corresponding 2-hydroxy compound (111).
