Abstract
When treated with maleanilic/fumaranilic acids or esters or the corresponding imides or isoimides, o-aminothiophenol furnishes benzothiazines, whereas treatment of o- aminothiophenol with acrylic acids/esters furnishes benzothiazepines. The orientational preferences in these Michael-type reactions are discussed.
