Abstract
With the exception of cyclo-C4F7OH,[1] alcohols possessing a fluorine atom on the α-carbon atom are unstable and undergo facile HF elimination. Therefore, it is not surprising that the most simple perfluorinated alcohol, trifluoromethanol (CF3OH), was synthesized by Seppelt only in 1977.[2] His synthesis of CF3OH involved the reaction of a positively and a negatively polarized chlorine ligand at Ą1208C [Eq.(1)].
