A silacyclopentadiene (silole) undergoes photo-induced [2+2] cycloaddition with CS 2 to afford the corresponding β-dithiolactones. The electron transfer from singlet excited state of the silole to CS 2 is shown to play an important role in the cycloaddition reaction.
