Abstract
The results now reported on the nitration and halogenation of, &monosubstituted furans make it possible to formulate with some confidence generalizations on the directing influence of such substituents. These may be stated as follows.(1) The entering group goes largely, if not exclusively, to one of the a-positions.(2) The particular a-position assumed by the substituent is determined largely by the nature of the group already in the P-position.
