Abstract

The solubilities of a-amino acids1 and certain of their derivatives2 in water and ethyl alcohol have been reported previously. Although the solubility measurements themselves suggest certain generalizations, such as that solubility in water increases with the dipole moment, and diminishes with the length of the paraffin chain, the exceptional behavior of certain molecules has been noted and associated with differences in crystal lattice energy.
