Abstract

Oxidation of xanthenes with manganese (II1) acetate in the presence of active methylene compounds such as 1, 3-dicarbonyl compounds, malononitrile derivatives, acetone, and nitromethane selectively gives 9-substituted xanthene derivatives in good yields.
