DOERING and HOFFMAXX first showed that dihalo- carbenes add to alkenes to yield dihalocyclopropanes. It has since been well established that dihalocarbenes are electrophiles which add preferentially to the more nucleophilic double bond ie., the one substituted with the most electron donating groups as shown from com- petitive reactions with mixtures of alkenes 293 ...
