Abstract

Results (1) The ketone Ia, trans-2-keto-4-phenyl-3-butenyl benzoate, was obtained in 93% yield by treatment of iodomethyl styryl ketone7 with sodium benzoate. trans-4-Nitrochalcone (Ib), prepared by condensation of p-nitrobenzaldehyde with acetophenone, was converted in part into the (1) h-ational Science Foundation Fellow, 1956-1957.
