Abstract

Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) is currently the most widely used reagent for cycliacylation of 3- arylpropionic acids to the corresponding l-indan~ nes.~**~*~ We used the reaction to successfully prepare a broad series of alkyl-substituted indanonesM and more recently have prepared several known 1-indanones with mixed substitution of alkyl and methoxy groups.
