Abstract
a-Hydroxy ketones (a-ketols), which are versatile starting materials in organic synthesis, are classically syntheaized by the acyloin condensation of esters,'but this methd suffers from a serious limitation in the preparation of cyclic and unsymmetrical aliphatic a-ketols.
