Abstract

The synthesis of ketones by intermolecular acylation with carboxylic acids in the presence of polyphosphoric acid is examined further. Thiophene and phenol are acetylated at 75', in good yields, but less reactive compounds like benzene and toluene react with aliphatic acids only under conditions vigorous enough to cause self-condensation of the resulting ketones.
