Abstract: The question of whether or not simple 2-arylethyl anions will undergo 1, 2 migration of aryl is explored for the p-biphenylylethyl system. Reaction of 1-chloro-2-p- biphenylylethane-l, l-d2 with excess lithium metal in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution at-70 gave a good yield of 2-p-biphenylylethyllithium-l, l-d2.
