Abstract
Similarly 4methoxyquinaldine (111) was benzoylated to form IV. n'hereas IT is nearly colorless, IV is bright yellow. This suggests that the latter compwnd exists at least partly in the enol structure which would presumably be stabilized by hydrogen bonding (IVa). In agreement with this, the hydrochloride of IV is colorless. Levine4 has proposed the corresponding structure for the copper chelate of 2-phenacylpyridine.
