Abstract

Therefore the" direct" cyclization of 4 to 1 involves the critical rearranged intermediates 5 (isolated as 6); ie, the sequence is 4[5]-1. The isolation and cyclization of the diphenylamines 6 (from the Smiles rearrangement of isomers 4) confirms that the syntheses of the phenoxazines 1 are unambiguous and show that direct cyclization of the diary1 ethers 4 do not occur under the conditions of the reactions.
