Abstract

Abstract 5-Phenylsulphonyl-and 5-phenylthio-2-thiophenaldehydes react with malononitrile and methyl cyanoacetate under the conditions of Knoevenagel reaction to give the corresponding condensation products. It has been found that when 2-cyano-3-(5- phenylsulphonyl-2-thienyl)-acrylonitrile is treated with nucleophiles the phenylsulphonyl group is substituted.
