Abstract

Meerwein-Ponndorf method or methylated with methylmagnesium iodide producing carbinols which were dehydrated ant1 dehydrogenated to lO-methyl-3, 4-benzpyrene (XI) and 8, 10-dimethyl-3, 4-benzpyrene(XII), respectively. The over-all yield of each hydrocarbon from anthrone was approximately 9%. The new 3, 4-benzpyrenes gave ultraviolet absorption spectra similar to the parent hydrocarbon, 3.4-benzpyrene. Samples ...
