Abstract: Carbon-14 and deuterium kinetic isotope effects at various positions have been measured in the solvolysis of neopentyl arenesulfonates. In the acetolysis of neopentyl nosylate (6) at 100" C, carbon isotope effects (kI2/kL4) are 1.073 at a, 1.019 at/3, and 1.046 at y. Deuterium effects (kH/kD) are 1.187 at a (D2) and 1.016 at y (D9). In the trifluoroacetolysis of neopentyl brosylate (7) at 65 OC, k'*/kI4 are 1.073 at a, 1.023 at/3, ...
