Abstract

Bicyclo [2.1. 0] pentane (1) is a highly strained hydrocarbon (calculated strain energy 57 kcal/mol). 6 The central bond contains the highest strain energy and upon its cleavage ea. 50 kcal/mol of the energy is released. Despite these characteristics, the hydrocarbon is thermally stable and decomposes only at temperatures over 300 OC. &
