Abstract

Imidazolyl anions are readily generated on C-2,' but generation of the thermodynamically less stable C-4(5) anions, in the absence of blocking groups at C-2:2 is much more difficult. Many biologically important molecules, for example histidine, H2-antagonists? and agricultural fun- gicides,' contain imidazole rings bearing alkyl substituents at the 4(5)-position.
