Abstract
The desired oxidation of IV to the corresponding dihydroxyacetone derivative V previously prepared by Fischers was readily effected with chromium trioxide in glacial acetic acid. An attempt to use the Oppenauer procedure for the oxidation, using cyclohexanone in boiling toluene as the hydrogen acceptor, failed to yield ketonic material.
