Abstract

Oxidative hydroxylation of toluene derivatives via alkoxysulfonium ion intermediates was achieved by integration of anodic oxidation and hydrolysis to give benzyl alcohols which are also susceptible to oxidation. Alkenes were also oxidized to give 1, 2-diols without overoxidation.
