Abstract

While carbethoxyl groups have been introduced in a number of instances into the a positions of acetonitriles substituted by phenyl only few examples are recorded when the acetonitriles are substituted by alkyl groups. With sodium ethoxide in diethyl carbonate4 the yields are moderate and several hours heating at the boiling point and distillation of the ethanol produced are required to drive the reactions to products.
