Abstract

Synthetic schemes outlining a general approach to chromophores of the anthracycline antibiotics in which the quinone ring C is replaced by a y-pyrone are described. Synthesis of several xanthone analogues of 4-demethoxydaunorubicin are given in addition to the coupling of a protected sugar moiety to the 7-position of selected aglycons.
