Abstract Both benzoxazole and benzimidazole are common heterocyclic scaffolds in biologically active and medicinally significant compounds. Reductive cyclization of ortho- substituted nitrobenzene derivatives provides an attractive route to benzoxazole or benzimidazole ring formation.
