Abstract
Although more than a hundred arylphosphonic acids have been described, little is known about the effect of the dihydroxyphosphinyl (-POsH2) group on the reactivity of the benzene ring and of side chains attached to it. The nitration of phenylphosphonic acid apparently requires vigorous reaction conditions and produces m-nitrophenylphosphonic acid in yields of about 60%. a These observations indicate that the POaH2 group deactivates the ...
