Abstract

The processes which occur during the formation of phenolaldehyde resins have been well systematized in recent years.'It is now generally agreed that three basic types of reactions occur:(1) Addition of aldehyde (formaldehyde) ortho or para to a phenolic hydroxyl group gives, as the simplest recognizable product, a methylol phenol. 2 (2) Condensation with a second molecule now gives a dinuclear reaction product.
