Abstract

The chlorination of propanal in aqueous hydrochloric acid can be controlled in such a manner as to produce either 2-chloropropanal or 2, 2-dichloropropanal in yields exceeding 85%. Previously unreported 2, 2-dichloropropanal, 2, 2-dichloropropanol, and 2, 4, 6-tris (1, l- dichloroethyl)-a-trioxane were prepared and characterized.
