Abstract
Contrary to p-quinone methides, the addition of primary alcohols to p-benzo-fuchsone (II) requires the presence of a catalytic amount of hydrogen chloride or p-toluenesulfonic acid. As the reaction product, the 4-hydroxybenzyl ether V is obtained in an almost quantitative yield.
