Abstract: The reactivity of the meso and dl photoreductive dimers (2 and 3) of 5, 6-dihydro-3, 5, 5-trimethyl- 1, 4-oxazin-2-one (1) is described. The meso and dl isomers readily interconvert, are air oxidized, and disproportionate. The reactivity results from the fact that the dimers have an unusually weak carbon-carbon single bond and exist in equilibrium with a radical (5).
