Abstract

The failure of Bredt's rule, as formulated in the quantitative expression (" S number") of Fawcett, to account for differences in strain between isomeric bridgehead olefins, eg, 1 and 2, represents a serious shortcoming of this numerical approach.'In contrast, the proposal by Wiseman2 that the strain in bridgehead alkenes is closely related to the strain of the corresponding trans cycloalkene accounts well for the properties of known bridgehead ...
