Abstract
The reaction of sodium cyclopentadienide with a large amount of methylating agent led to polymethylcyclopentadienes. The resulting product distribution supported our previous conclusions that the cyclopentadienide ring can undergo electrophilic substitution and that a substituent already present on the ring has a directing influence on the electrophile.
