Abstract
Abstract The bark of Halfordia scleroxyla contains the tertiary bases halfordine, C 19 H 20 O 4 N 2 (II), halfordinone, C 19 H 18 O 3 N 2 (III), and halfordinol, C 14 H 10 O 2 N 2 (IV), together with the yellow quaternary base N-methylhalfordinium chloride, C 20 H 23 O 4 N 2+ Cl-(I). These alkaloids are derivatives of 2 (3'-pyridyl)-5-(4"-hydroxyphenyl) oxazole; physical and chemical evidence for the structural assignments is presented.
