Abstract
Sulfonyl indoles act as effective precursors of vinylogous imino derivatives in the reaction with nitroalkanes under basic conditions leading to the corresponding nitro indoles in good yield. This procedure represents an effective option to the classical conjugate addition of indoles to nitroalkenes.
