Abstract
Methyl phenanthrene-9-carboxylate, dimethyl phenanthrene-9, 10-dicarboxylate, and N, N- dimethyl phenanthrene-9-carboxaraide have been prepared directly from fluorene by a novel route. Neighboring group participation by carbomethoxy has been clearly demonstrated in the reactions of some 9, 9-disubstituted fluorenes.
