Abstract

dehyde was 45%, mp 76-77. 6 m-Cyanocinnamic Acid.-The procedure of Walling and Wolfstirno was followed. A solution of 48.0 g.(0.37 mole) of crude mcyanobenzaldehyde and 42.5 g.(0.41 mole) of malonic acid (EK Co.) in 5 ml. of pyridine and 50 ml. of 95% alcohol was heated for ten hours on a steam-bath. The precipitate was collected and recrystallized from alcohol to give 45.3 g., 71.4% of the theoretical amount, of m-cyanocinnamic acid, mp ...
