Abstract

Experimental For the purpose of isolating and identifying the reaction products, 30 ml. of a 5% solution of thiophene in cyclohexane was refluxed with 300 ml. of 8 N nitric acid. The reaction mixture went through the following color changes: colorless, turbid, yellow, orange, clear yellow. The reaction was terminated a few minutes after attaining the clear yellow stage.
