Abstract
The condensation of aliphatic aldehydes with methyl P-methylglutaconate gives alkylidene glutaconic acids (111) and carboxy-&lactones (IV). Shortchain and branched-chain aldehydes give diacids (111); longer chain and unbranched aldehydes give carboxylactones (IV).
