Abstract
Nucleophilic substitution reactions of 1-phenylethyl benzenesulfonates with anilines have been investigated in methanol-acetonitrile mixtures at 25 “C. Magnitudes of the Hammett coefficients px, py, and pz indicate that a stronger nucleophile leads to a greater degree of bond cleavage whereas a stronger nucleofuge leads to tighter bond formation in the transition state.
