Abstract

The formation of cyclic ethers from methyl groups attached to an aromatic ring via decomposition of the hypobromite of a tertiary benzylic alcohol in an ortho position is described. The reaction occurs only for tertiary hydroxyl groups, and groups other than methyl are not functionalized.
