Abstract
The four stereoisomers of 1, 2-diphenyl-2-methJ. ll-butanol (111) have been prepared in an optically pure state, and their relative configurations have been assigned on the basis of their modes of preparation. The configuration of the quaternary carbon of this svstern has been related to that of (+)-~ lvceraldehyde, thus allowing the absolute configurations of these as II well as a number of other substances to be assigned.
