Abstract
(IV)(V)(VI)(VIII the product was anthracene, produced by cyclisation of the keto-ester (V) to the perhydroanthracene derivative (VII), which by the subsequent procedure yielded anthracene. This unexpected result confirms our view that the ester group is attached at C (lzl in the original adduct.
