Abstract

It was shown by Baeyer3 that diphenylphthalin (triphenylmethane-2-carboxylic acid) is converted rapidly, by concentrated sulfuric acid, into 9-phenylanthrone-10 (or 9-phenyl-10- hydroxyanthracene) and that oxidation of the latter yields 9-hydroxy-9-phenylanthrone-10. It has been found that substituted diphenylphthalins, such as 4'-meth0xy-,~ 2 ', 4”-dimetho~ y- ,~ 4 ', 4”-dihydro~ y-,~ 4', 4”-dimetho~ y-,~?~ 4 ', 4”-di-~ hloro-,~ and 3', 3”, 5', 5”-tetrabromo ...
