Abstract
Oxidation of a small amount of the liquid acids with alkaline permanganate10 yielded a mixture of dihydroxyand tetrahydroxystearic acids. The dihydroxystearic acid was extracted from the crude mixed acids with chloroform. After crystallization from alcohol it melted at 129- 130".
